I created the basic structure of
this mission while in Medical School doing a Psychiatry rotation.
I started the level July, 1995, and I finished it January 5th,
1996. It took 6 months for me to make this one.
I wanted to create a good, complicated structure to build on right
from the beginning, and then refine it from there. Some structures
may look familiar, but every cube was made by me using devil ver.
99b, and later ver. 2.01. The level is completely original, and
required many painstaking hours to construct. I was for that reason
going to call it "painful" level in the begining for that reason.
The mission has large rooms, some of which are flat, for good
2 dimentional fighting with mega missles, and there are small
corridors for "in fighting" if you will. The mission has a
surrealistic flavor, and odd structures. There is one cubicle
behind a secret door which contains 9 mega missles! Advantage
goes to the player who finds the stashes of weapons and sheild
boosts.
Surreal Expanses is designed for action packed anarchy play
and fascillitates non stop action (no need to run looking for
weapons). There are many, many weapons. I put the cloaking
devices and invulnerability devices in one room away from the
action so players who don't wish to use them in anarchy won't
accidentally run into them.
There are some robots who have evolved the ability to grow a
camo skin which protects them. Check it out.
This level was intended for anarchy play for a circle of
my own local Descent multiplayer adversaries, but it has a full
complement of robots and is very challenging in single player
mode. I hope this level is enjoyed and cherished by Descent
enthusiasts and adopted as a favorite anarchy arena.
Thanks to Gene Brazee and Bill Grey for being such potent
Descent adversaries and for having inspired me to create this
level for them.

Richard Maleski, Author of Surreal Expanses wishes to
thank interplay and parallax for Descent, the most superior
action game in existence for the home computer.
