For the first time, I have been able to incorporate intro and exit briefings to help stage the story. All my work is original and the only thing I have borrowed is the name of the mad scientist and instead of turning men into animals he is turning men into alien machines. All the Moreau levels are characterized by a few common custom textures such as the coarsed stone walls and Moreau's emblem of a sword piercing the Earth. I have tried to push custom textures to their limits and experimented with a broken glass texture in Area 51 and one way force fields and other "see-thru" textures. In cube design I also strove to achieve realism in many areas, Area 51 and its secret level are another good example; I used my stair cube-blocks and the fire in the fireplace block. The stairs are at more of a human scale than anything else. Anyone who as tried making stairs in Descent knows how difficult the task can be. The fireplace idea came together rather quickly when I realized that I could get the fuel power cell texture to stretch out and appear as leaping flames. A ship can also draw power from the fireplace at the right angle. In the Tower of Dr. Moreau, the first level, I had to develop a cube system that allowed you a view of Dr. Moreau standing on an escape pod exit that was place under a shielded reactor in such a way to give Moreau a chance to escape PTMC capture. In the Vertigo Lab, second level, I incorporated Vertigo robots and more custom textures. He even has a view to the outside hydroponics dome from one of his rooms - keep in mind that this base is in an obscure asteroid. This level has most of the "tricks". The Robot Carnival is a personal favorite of mine. I got the horses in the carousel to appear to be going up and down and around! I also like the 3-ring circus and ring of robot generating fire. In this level I experimented with "super-sized" cubes for the space effect. In other words, when I realized that cubes larger than 200 tend to loose their wall/edge properties, I knew they would be perfect for space cubes because when laser fire or missile hit their sides they would just disappear rather than explode. Doing this caused an slight drop in the framerate on my P133. I also experiemented with "Robot- Art" on this level. My best success is with the tame yet deadly robot kenetic sculpture in the last red section of the level. The Robots also tend to be similar in their permutations within the Moreau levels with a few minor variances. One of the robots that I received a lot of mail on was the revised Class 2 Drone that you don't run into until level three, the Robot Carnival. (The regular Class 2 Drone appears in the first level.) Also another interesting variety of robot is the Cloaked Sidearm that fires both plasma and phoenix. There are also a few other surprises - I tired to use the "overwrite" function of the hxm in the new levels to my advantage; it makes for a few nasty moments in Area 51! The only bug that I could find is with the secret level transition in Area 51; when you reappear in Area 51 after being in the secret level, the screen view doesn't change until you move your ship. (It might just be a function of my own video card). Also, listen carefully to your mission objectives in Area 51; all the keys are on the secret level so be careful to obtain them BEFORE you blow up the level and close the invasion portal. Good luck Material Defender - you're going to need it! *---- PERSONAL INFORMATION ----* Real Name.........: Cameron Fultz Pilot Name........: Stryker Address1..........: 117 239th Place S.W.
